AYURVEDA ~ The science of “a long and healthy life"

Self- awareness is the highest goal of Ayurveda.
Srilanka Ayurveda Ayurveda, the world’s oldest traditional medical science put down in written form, is also called the “mother of medicine”.
Ayurveda is rooted in the time honoured Vedic high culture of Ancient India. During colonial times this natural healing method sank into oblivion but has enjoyed a renaissance over the past decades. Today not only India but also nearby Sri Lanka are considered to be the spiritual and intellectual centres of original and authentic Ayurveda. Ayurveda is about the interplay of body, spirit and soul in harmony with nature and the spiritual dimension.

“Ayurveda is the art of living your daily life in harmony with the laws of nature. The intention of this ancient science is to keep health and to cure diseases.” - (Vasant Lad)
Panchakarma - The heart of Ayurvedic therapy
Srilanka Ayurveda This intensive therapeutic method is a cleansing of the deep tissues and rejuvenating program for the body, mind and consciousness. Elimination of toxins, liberation of repressed feelings and mental stress create regeneration and pave the way for healing. Panchakarma restores the balance between the three life energies, also named Vata, Pitta and Kapha.

Our Panchakarma program

After the first consultation our Ayurvedic doctor designs your personal therapy plan, which is custom tailored to your current state of health, wellness and constitution. (Herbal medicine, special food, oil massages, baths, and heat treatments). These treatments are there to bring about the cleansing of toxins from the tissues of the body. The toxins are led into the gastrointestinal or respiratory tract. Towards the end of the cure the accumulated toxins will be discharged through enema or other purging methods. In Panchakarma we know five differrent methods.
Srilanka Ayurveda The Panchakarma (Pancha= five, karma =actions) treatment uses five different methods to cleanse the body from toxins.
The doctor individually decides which one to use according your current state of health, wellness and constitution. The cleansing treatments, performed towards the end of the cure, are as follows:

1. Vamana Karma - Vomit therapy to excret disorderd Kapha
2. Virechana Karma - Therapeutic purgative for elimination of Pitta-dysfunctions
3. Vasti Karma - Therapeutic clyster for elimination of Vata-dysfunctions
4. Nasya Karma - Cleansing of the sinuses with warm oil or smoke
5. Raktha Moksha - bloodletting, (rarely used)
The Three Doshas - Basis of Ayurveda
Srilanka Ayurveda

According to Ayurvedic science there are three different function - or energy principles which work in the human body. In a healthy body these Doshas are in harmony, while there is a misbalance in a sick person. At the beginning of the treatment the patient is examined for disadvantagely heightened doshas. The doctor can check this by taking the person’s pulse (3 finger method pulse evaluation), and through anamnesis and other tests.

These Doshas are:

Vata (air) - movement and communication

Srilanka Ayurveda Vata is in charge of all movements in the body and the alertness of the mind. It is responsible for the breathing, food intake, waste discharge and communication.

The attributes of Vata are: mobile, cold, dry, rough, light and clear.

Adversarial for Vata are irregular and cold meals, extensive travelling, noise, cold, shock. In autumn and winter as well as in the early morning and old age Vata gets of balance. This can be well observed in the following symptoms: dry skin and mucous membranes, flatulence and constipation, restlessness, fearfulness, sleep disorder, shooting pains, cramps and muscle tension.
In order to rebalance Vata one needs a regular rhythm of life, warmth, stability, trust and persistence.
Treatments - Wellness for body and soul
Srilanka Ayurveda

The ways of treatment in Ayurveda base on the ancient art of healing which has been practised for over 5,000 years. One can differentiate between soft treatments for the preparation of the body and the five cleansing treatments of Panchakarma that lead to the elimination of toxins. The following paragraphs will give you a survey of the major ways of treatment applied during your Panchakarma program.

Treatments - Seetharama Ayurveda Resort:

Oil massage (Abhyanga)

Srilanka Ayurveda These soft oil-massages are an important part of Ayurveda. The natural herbal oils help to fluidify the fat soluble toxins in the tissue.

Whole Body Synchronized Massage (Samvahana)

Two massage therapists working in synchronized movements massage the body from top to toe. This method transports the now liquid toxins into the intestinal tract. Blocked energy and feelings, stored in the tissue of the body are set free and activated.

Thermal Massage (Rice bag massage/ Navarakizi)

Here the body is tapped softly with hot rice bags. A special kind of rice grown for medical purposes only and cooked in herbal liquid is used for this treatment.
